Flemish realism softened by Italian influance is evedent in Van Dyck's portrayal of Samson's breaking the bonds placed upon him by the Philistines while his betrayer looks on. The picture was painted about 1628, shortly after Van Dyck, ending a five year stay in Italy, returned to Anntwerp for further study under Rubens, his original tutor.
